Virusinfektio is a medical term referring to an illness caused by a virus. Viruses are microscopic infectious agents that can only replicate inside the living cells of other organisms. When a virus enters the body, it invades host cells and uses their machinery to produce more copies of itself. This process can damage or destroy the host cells, leading to the symptoms of the infection.

The mode of transmission for virus infections varies widely. Some viruses spread through respiratory droplets expelled when an infected person coughs or sneezes, such as influenza and the common cold. Others are transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, like blood or saliva, as seen with HIV and hepatitis. Fecal-oral transmission is another route, where viruses present in feces contaminate food or water, leading to infections like norovirus. Vector-borne viruses are transmitted by insects, such as mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus.

Symptoms of virus infections are diverse and depend on the specific virus and the body system it affects. Common symptoms can include fever, fatigue, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and digestive issues. Some viral infections are mild and resolve on their own, while others can be severe and life-threatening. Examples of common viral infections include the common cold, influenza, COVID-19, measles, chickenpox, and herpes.

Diagnosis of a virus infection often involves a physical examination, a review of symptoms, and sometimes laboratory tests. These tests might include blood tests to detect antibodies or viral antigens, or molecular tests to identify viral genetic material. Treatment for most viral infections focuses on managing symptoms and supporting the body's immune system, as antiviral medications are not effective against all viruses and are often reserved for specific, severe infections. Prevention through vaccination, good hygiene practices, and avoiding exposure to infected individuals remains a cornerstone of public health strategy against viral diseases.
