Virtuaalityöpö, often translated as "virtual desktop," refers to a computing environment where the user interacts with a graphical user interface (GUI) that is not directly tied to the physical hardware they are using. Instead, the desktop environment is hosted on a remote server and streamed to the user's device. This allows users to access their applications, data, and operating system from a variety of endpoints, such as thin clients, personal computers, or even mobile devices, as long as they have a network connection.

The concept of virtual desktops is closely related to desktop virtualization technologies. These technologies separate the desktop operating system and applications from the underlying hardware. This separation enables centralized management, enhanced security, and flexible access. Users can log in from different devices and have the same personalized desktop experience, as their data and applications reside on the server.

There are two primary models for implementing virtual desktops: Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Remote Desktop Services (RDS). VDI typically involves deploying individual virtual machines for each user, offering a more personalized and isolated experience. RDS, on the other hand, allows multiple users to share a single server operating system, which can be more cost-effective for certain use cases.

The benefits of virtual desktops include improved IT management, as updates and security patches can be applied centrally, and reduced hardware costs, as less powerful endpoint devices can be used. They also offer enhanced data security since sensitive information is stored on the server rather than on individual user devices. Furthermore, virtual desktops facilitate remote work and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policies by providing consistent access to work resources regardless of the user's location or device.
