Vinduesramme is the structural frame that surrounds a window’s glazing and hardware. It forms the boundary between interior and exterior, bears the window’s weight, and provides support, weather sealing, and energy performance. The frame determines the window’s size, strength, and overall durability.

Common materials include wood, PVC (uPVC), aluminum, and composites. Wood offers good insulation and a traditional appearance but requires maintenance. PVC is durable and low‑maintenance but can be less stiff at large sizes. Aluminum is strong and slim but conducts heat, so modern frames use thermal breaks and insulation internally. Composites balance several properties to reduce drawbacks of single materials.

Typical components are the frame itself, including jambs (vertical sides), the head (top), and the sill (bottom). The glazing is held in place by glazing beads or a sash, and hardware such as hinges, locks, and weatherstripping is attached to the frame. The frame is installed in a wall opening and must accommodate movement, drainage, and sealing.

Frame types vary by operation and appearance: fixed frames for non‑opening glazing; casement and tilt‑and‑turn frames; sliding or double‑hung frames. Modern frames often support double or triple glazing and integrate with weather seals and thermal barriers.

Installation and maintenance: frames must be correctly measured and installed to ensure airtightness and watertightness. They are sealed with caulk or sealant and may include flashing to prevent water ingress. Maintenance includes cleaning, refinishing wood, and replacing seals or weatherstripping as needed.

Performance is evaluated by energy and safety standards, including U‑value, air and water tightness, and structural strength. Standards vary by region; in the EU, windows commonly conform to EN 14351-1, with national adaptations.
