Vindlass
Vindlass, also spelled windlass in English, is a machine used on boats and ships to wind in or pay out a rope or chain. Its primary role is to handle anchors, though it can also be used for raising nets, lines, or other gear. A windlass typically consists of a drum or axle around which the line or chain coils, a drive mechanism (manual crank, electric motor, or hydraulic unit), and a braking or locking system to hold position. When used with chain, a wheel such as a gypsy or wildcat engages the chain to control motion.
There are two main configurations: horizontal windlasses, where the drum lies parallel to the deck, and vertical
Typical uses include anchoring and anchoring-related operations: paying out chain to set or retrieve an anchor,
