Viljastamisel refers to the process of fertilization, a crucial step in sexual reproduction. It is the fusion of male and female gametes, typically a sperm and an egg, to form a zygote. This union restores the diploid number of chromosomes, half from each parent. In humans and many other animals, this occurs internally, with sperm traveling to meet the egg within the female reproductive tract. External fertilization is common in many aquatic organisms, where eggs and sperm are released into the water.

The process of fertilization involves several stages. First, sperm must reach the egg, which often involves complex migratory pathways. Upon contact, the sperm penetrates the egg's outer layers. This penetration triggers biochemical changes within the egg, preventing further sperm from entering and initiating the fusion of the pronuclei, the nuclei of the sperm and egg. Once the pronuclei merge, the genetic material combines, and a single-celled zygote is formed. This zygote then begins a series of cell divisions, known as cleavage, which marks the start of embryonic development.

The success of fertilization depends on various factors, including the viability of gametes, the timing of ovulation and insemination, and the physiological conditions within the reproductive system. In assisted reproductive technologies, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), fertilization is achieved outside the body in a laboratory setting.
