Vihorlat

Vihorlat is a mountain range located in eastern Slovakia, bordering Ukraine. It is part of the Eastern Slovak Lowland and the larger Carpathian Mountains system. The highest peak in the Vihorlat range is Vihorlat itself, standing at 1,075 meters (3,527 feet) above sea level. The mountains are characterized by dense deciduous forests, primarily oak and beech, interspersed with meadows and rocky outcrops.

The landscape of Vihorlat is shaped by volcanic activity from the Neogene period. This volcanic origin is evident in the presence of ancient lava flows and tuff formations. A notable geological feature is the Morske Oko, or "Sea Eye," a picturesque glacial lake situated in a volcanic crater. This lake is one of the largest and most beautiful mountain lakes in Slovakia.

Vihorlat is a popular destination for hiking and nature tourism. Several marked trails wind through the mountains, offering scenic views and opportunities to observe diverse flora and fauna. The area is a protected landscape area, recognized for its ecological significance and natural beauty. The forests are home to various wildlife, including deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species. The remote and relatively untouched nature of the Vihorlat mountains makes it a valuable natural asset for Slovakia.
