Viewpointsrigidbody is a term used in computer vision and robotics to describe a modelling paradigm in which a set of camera viewpoints mounted on or associated with a single rigid object are treated as observations of a single moving rigid body. The fundamental assumption is that the spatial relationship between the viewpoints remains fixed, even as the entire rig translates or rotates in space. This rigidity constraint links poses across cameras and time, enabling joint estimation of the rig’s pose and the scene structure from multi-view data.

Representation and techniques: A typical formulation uses a reference frame attached to the rigid body and per-view extrinsics that are constant in the rig frame. The state may include the rig’s pose in the world, the fixed inter-camera transforms, and potentially 3D landmarks observed by multiple views. Estimation is performed with pose-graph optimization, bundle adjustment, or filtering, incorporating observations across all viewpoints and time steps. The redundancy provided by multiple viewpoints improves pose accuracy and robustness to occlusions and calibration errors.

Applications and challenges: Employed in simultaneous localization and mapping, multi-camera motion capture, AR/VR systems with headset-mounted camera rigs, and precision robotics. Key challenges include maintaining precise calibration of the rig, synchronizing views, handling non-rigid deformations or flex in the mounting hardware, and ensuring consistent data association across views.
