Viewliner

Viewliner is a family of single-level passenger railcars used by Amtrak for long-distance service. The class was developed to replace aging single-level equipment and to expand the capacity and functionality of Amtrak’s on-board fleet. Viewliners come in several configurations, including baggage cars and sleeper cars, with the later generation adding improved accessibility and efficiency.

The first generation, commonly referred to as Viewliner I, entered service in the 1990s. These cars were primarily used as baggage cars and sleeper/baggage configurations on various long-distance routes. They featured modernized interiors for sleeping accommodations, including roomettes and bedrooms, as well as substantial luggage space and utility areas. Viewliner I cars helped streamline operations on routes that relied on single-level equipment.

The second generation, Viewliner II, began entering service in the mid-2010s. Built to higher standards and with enhanced accessibility, the Viewliner II fleet includes both baggage and sleeper configurations designed to support ADA-compliant operations and greater reliability. These cars are intended to complement Amtrak’s existing long-distance equipment by providing modern amenities, standardized interiors, and improved energy efficiency. CAF USA is reported as the manufacturer for the Viewliner II program.

Operational use varies by route and assignment, but Viewliners are generally deployed on selected long-distance trains to handle baggage needs and overnight accommodations. Some of the earlier Viewliner I cars have been retired or reassigned as replacements and newer Viewliner II equipment expanded the lineup.
