These microorganisms are essential for breaking down organic matter and removing pollutants from sewage. In the initial stages, aerobic bacteria, which require oxygen, consume dissolved organic compounds, converting them into carbon dioxide, water, and new bacterial cells. This is often achieved through methods like activated sludge or trickling filters, where wastewater is aerated or passed over a surface colonized by these microbes. As the organic load decreases, anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in oxygen-deprived environments, become more prevalent. They play a crucial role in breaking down more complex solids and producing biogas, a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide. Facultative bacteria, capable of living in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, also contribute to the overall purification.
