Vichada

Vichada is a department (state) located in the eastern region of Colombia, bordering Venezuela to the east and the departments of Meta, Casanare, and Guaviare to the west, south, and southwest, respectively. It is one of the least populated departments in Colombia, with a small but growing population concentrated primarily in urban centers like Santa Rosa del Sur, the capital, and Puerto Carreño, a key commercial hub along the Orinoco River.

The department covers an extensive area of 70,800 square kilometers, making it one of the largest in Colombia. Its geography is dominated by vast plains, part of the vast Orinoquia region, characterized by savannas, wetlands, and dense forests. The Orinoco River, one of the longest rivers in South America, flows through Vichada, playing a crucial role in the region’s economy and transportation. The department also features significant natural resources, including oil, natural gas, and agricultural potential, particularly for cattle ranching and crop cultivation.

Vichada’s economy is largely driven by agriculture, livestock, and natural resource extraction. Oil and gas production have been key industries, with significant reserves discovered in recent decades. However, the department faces challenges such as limited infrastructure, underdeveloped social services, and limited access to education and healthcare, particularly in rural areas.
