Vetchlings

Vetchlings are a common name used for the young growth of vetch plants, particularly seedlings and new shoots of species within the genus Vicia. The term is used by gardeners and agronomists to refer to plants in early growth stages before flowering.

In their juvenile stage, vetchlings display characteristic pinnate leaves with several paired leaflets and often a terminal or lateral tendril. They resemble mature vetches but are smaller and more delicate. As legumes, they form pods after flowering; flowers are typical pea-like, often purple or white depending on species.

Vetches are annual or perennial climbers or ground covers; they prefer well-drained, moderately fertile soils and full sun to partial shade. They fix atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules, benefiting companion plants in mixed beds and as cover crops. Propagation is usually by direct sowing in early spring or late summer in mild climates. Some vetchlings may be short-lived in cold winters.

In gardens, they can serve as ground cover, forage, or green manure. In natural settings, vetchlings contribute to habitat diversity and pollinator resources. As with other vetches, care should be taken to manage spreading growth to prevent unwanted seeding in sensitive areas.
