Vestíbúlarendurnæring, also known as vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT), is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to improve balance and reduce dizziness in individuals experiencing vestibular disorders. The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, is responsible for maintaining balance, spatial orientation, and coordinating movement with vision. When this system is damaged or dysfunctional, it can lead to symptoms such as vertigo, unsteadiness, and problems with gaze stability.

VRT is an individualized treatment program developed by a trained therapist. It typically involves a series of exercises aimed at retraining the brain to compensate for faulty signals from the vestibular system. These exercises often include eye movement exercises (gaze stabilization), habituation exercises to reduce motion-induced dizziness, and balance training. The goal is to help the patient's brain learn to interpret sensory information differently and to improve the function of the vestibular system through repeated stimulation.

The effectiveness of VRT has been demonstrated for a variety of vestibular conditions, including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere's disease, vestibular neuritis, and labyrinthitis, as well as dizziness associated with head injuries or aging. While the process can sometimes initially increase symptoms as the brain adapts, consistent participation in the prescribed exercises generally leads to significant improvement in symptoms and a better quality of life.
