Vesisirrot

Vesisirrot is a Finnish term that translates to "water roots" or "water shoots." It refers to the new growth that emerges from the roots of a plant, typically after the main stem or trunk has been cut back, damaged, or removed. This phenomenon is common in many species of trees and shrubs, particularly those that are deciduous.

When a plant's upper parts are compromised, its root system can still be viable and possess stored energy reserves. Vesisirrot represent the plant's attempt to regenerate and survive by utilizing these reserves to produce new shoots from the existing root structure. These new shoots are often vigorous and can grow rapidly, sometimes even outcompeting other vegetation.

In some cases, vesisirrot can be beneficial, allowing a beloved tree to sprout anew. However, in other contexts, such as with unwanted trees or invasive species, it can be a challenge for control. For example, if a tree is felled but the root system remains intact, the stumps can produce numerous vesisirrot, making complete removal difficult without further treatment of the root system.
