Veseátültetés, also known as kidney transplantation, is a surgical procedure where a diseased or damaged kidney is replaced with a healthy kidney from a donor. This life-saving treatment is typically offered to individuals suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD), a condition where the kidneys have lost most or all of their ability to function. ESRD can be caused by various conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, glomerulonephritis, and polycystic kidney disease.

The process involves finding a suitable donor, who can be either living or deceased. Living donors are often family members or close friends, but altruistic donors are also possible. Deceased donors are individuals who have been declared brain dead. A thorough evaluation is conducted for both the recipient and the donor to ensure compatibility and minimize the risk of rejection. Blood type, tissue type (HLA matching), and crossmatching are crucial factors.

During the surgery, the donor kidney is usually placed in the lower abdomen of the recipient, connecting it to the recipient's blood vessels and bladder. The recipient's own kidneys are generally left in place unless they are causing specific problems. After the transplant, recipients require lifelong immunosuppressant medications to prevent their immune system from attacking and rejecting the new kidney. Regular medical follow-ups are essential to monitor kidney function and manage potential complications.
