Vertrauensanker is a term originating from German that translates to "trust anchor." It refers to a trusted entity or component within a system that is used to establish and verify trust. In cybersecurity and distributed systems, a trust anchor is a fundamental element upon which the security of the entire system relies. It acts as a root of trust, meaning that other entities can be trusted if they are certified or vouched for by the trust anchor.

The concept of a trust anchor is crucial in various applications, including public key infrastructure (PKI) and digital certificates. In PKI, a certificate authority (CA) often serves as a trust anchor. When a user receives a digital certificate, they can verify its authenticity by checking if it has been signed by a CA that they already trust. This process involves tracing the certificate's chain of trust back to the root CA, which is the ultimate trust anchor.

Beyond PKI, trust anchors are also employed in areas like secure boot processes for hardware, where a known-good firmware component acts as the initial trust anchor. This ensures that the system boots only trusted software.
