Vertaissähkö

Vertaissähkö, meaning peer-to-peer electricity in Finnish, refers to a model of energy production and consumption where individuals or small communities can generate their own electricity, often from renewable sources, and trade it directly with each other. This concept is enabled by advancements in distributed energy technologies and smart grids. In a vertaissähkö system, consumers can also become producers, known as "prosumers." They might install solar panels on their rooftops or invest in small wind turbines.

The electricity generated by prosumers can be used to meet their own needs, with any surplus being fed back into the local grid. Through a digital platform, these prosumers can then sell their excess electricity to other consumers within their community or even to the broader grid, often at a pre-agreed price or through a dynamic pricing mechanism. This peer-to-peer trading bypasses traditional energy utility intermediaries to some extent, fostering local energy markets and potentially leading to more competitive pricing.

Key enablers for vertaissähkö include smart meters that accurately measure both consumption and production, and digital platforms that facilitate transactions and manage the flow of energy. The regulatory framework also plays a crucial role in defining the rules for prosumers, grid connection, and the trading of electricity. While the concept offers potential benefits like increased energy independence, reduced transmission losses, and promotion of renewable energy, challenges remain, including grid stability management and ensuring fair market practices.
