Versuchte

Versuchte is the Präteritum (simple past) form of the German verb versuchen, meaning to try or to attempt. It is used to describe past attempts and corresponds to the English word “tried” or “attempted.” In narrative writing, versuchte frequently appears to place actions in a past time frame.

In legal or formal contexts, versuchte can also appear as part of the compound der versuchte Diebstahl or ähnliche phrasing to mean “attempted” in an attributive sense.

Adjectival use: Versuchte can function as a participial adjective in compounds meaning “attempted.” The attributive form is inflected to match gender and case (e.g., versuchter Diebstahl, versuchte Täuschung). In such cases it is not capitalized, unlike a noun.

Examples: Er versuchte, das Problem zu lösen. Sie versuchte vergeblich, den Bus zu erreichen. Der Bericht erwähnt eine versuchte Täuschung. The word thus serves both as a past-tense verb form and, in compounds, as an adjective meaning “attempted.”
