Verinag

Verinag is a town and a notified area committee in the Anantnag district of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is located at the southern end of the Kashmir Valley. The town is primarily known for the Verinag Spring, the source of the Jhelum River.

The Verinag Spring is a large, natural spring set in a large octagonal enclosure of masonry. This octagonal structure was built by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1620. The spring is surrounded by a garden, which was also laid out by the Mughals. The water from the spring is remarkably clear and is considered sacred by some.

Historically, Verinag was a significant halting point on the ancient Mughal Road, which connected the Kashmir Valley with the Punjab plains. The ruins of Mughal caravanserais can still be seen in the vicinity, hinting at its past importance as a stopover for travelers and traders.

The town itself is a picturesque spot, attracting tourists with its natural beauty and historical significance. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills and lush greenery, especially during the spring and summer months. The climate is temperate, with cold winters and pleasant summers.
