Verdünnungsmittel, also known as thinners, are solvents used to reduce the viscosity of various substances, primarily paints, lacquers, and inks. Their main function is to make these materials easier to apply by brush, spray, or other methods. By dissolving or dispersing the solid components of a coating, thinners allow for a smoother, more even film to form upon drying.

The composition of a thinner varies depending on the specific application. Common components include organic solvents such as acetone, toluene, xylene, and mineral spirits. Some thinners are a blend of several solvents to achieve a desired evaporation rate and solvency power. The evaporation rate is crucial; a thinner that evaporates too quickly can cause the coating to dry before it can level properly, leading to defects. Conversely, a slow-evaporating thinner might prolong the drying time excessively.

Beyond viscosity reduction, thinners can also influence the drying process, adhesion, and final appearance of a coating. In some cases, they can act as cleaning agents, removing grease, oil, or old paint from surfaces before recoating. The choice of thinner must be compatible with the binder system of the substance being thinned to avoid unwanted chemical reactions or poor film formation. Incorrect thinning can lead to peeling, cracking, or a dull finish. Safety precautions are essential when handling thinners due to their often flammable nature and potential health hazards from inhalation or skin contact.
