Verdichtingsmethoden, often translated as compaction methods, refer to techniques used to increase the density of a soil or aggregate material. This is achieved by reducing the air voids within the material through mechanical means. The primary goals of compaction are to improve soil strength, reduce permeability, and minimize settlement. Proper compaction is crucial in various engineering applications, including road construction, building foundations, and landfill operations.

There are several common types of compaction equipment. Rollers, such as static smooth wheel rollers, pneumatic tire rollers, and sheepsfoot rollers, are widely used. Static rollers apply weight to the soil, forcing particles closer together. Pneumatic tire rollers use a kneading action to compact the material. Sheepsfoot rollers are effective for compacting cohesive soils by penetrating the soil mass and compacting it from the bottom up. Vibratory compactors, including plate compactors and rammers (or tampers), utilize vibration to liquefy the soil temporarily, allowing particles to rearrange into a denser configuration.

The effectiveness of compaction depends on several factors, including the type of soil, its moisture content, and the amount of energy applied. Optimal moisture content, known as the optimum moisture content (OMC), is the water content at which a soil can achieve its maximum dry density for a given compactive effort. If the soil is too dry, there may not be enough lubrication for particles to move; if it is too wet, the water fills the voids and resists compaction. The compactive effort refers to the amount of energy delivered to the soil by the compaction equipment.
