Rollers

Rollers are cylindrical components designed to rotate about an axis to support movement, guide materials, or apply forces. The term covers a broad range of devices, from consumer grooming tools to industrial components used in machinery and manufacturing.

Hair rollers are thin cylinders placed in damp hair to create curl or volume. Made of plastic, foam, or metal, they vary by diameter and material. Heat or chemical setting methods determine curl tightness and durability.

Paint rollers consist of a handle and a cylindrical nap-covered roller used to apply paint on walls. The nap thickness and material affect coverage and texture, while replaceable sleeves enable cleaning or reuse.

Roller bearings use rolling elements—cylindrical, spherical, needle, or tapered—to reduce friction between moving parts. They support radial loads and, in many designs, axial loads as well. Common types include cylindrical, spherical, needle, and tapered bearings, which are widely used in automotive engines, gearboxes, industrial machinery, and railway equipment. Proper lubrication and precise alignment are essential to their service life.

Conveyor rollers are cylindrical members mounted on frames to support and guide items along a production line. They may be driven or passive, using belts, chains, or gravity. Materials include steel, aluminum, or plastics, with finishes chosen for load, speed, and environmental conditions.

Rolling mills use paired rolls to reduce metal thickness and shape cross-sections. Configurations include two-high and four-high mills, sometimes with work-rolls and backup rolls. Hardened steel or alloy rolls require lubrication and precise alignment to maintain tolerances during processing.
