Verbrühung refers to an injury caused by contact with hot liquids or steam. Unlike burns caused by dry heat like fire, scalds are characterized by the moist nature of the heat source. Common causes include spilling hot beverages such as coffee or tea, accidental contact with boiling water from cooking, or exposure to steam from kettles, showers, or hot baths.

The severity of a verbrühung depends on several factors: the temperature of the liquid or steam, the duration of contact, and the area of the body affected. Symptoms can range from redness and pain to blistering and deep tissue damage. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to severe scalds due to thinner skin and potentially slower healing processes.
