Venenoperationen, also known as venous surgery, encompass a range of surgical procedures performed to treat diseases and conditions affecting the veins. These operations are primarily aimed at restoring normal blood flow, relieving symptoms, and preventing complications associated with venous disorders. Common conditions treated include varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and venous insufficiency.

The specific type of venous surgery depends on the nature and severity of the venous problem. For varicose veins, procedures like stripping and ligation are traditional methods where affected veins are surgically removed. Minimally invasive techniques have become more prevalent, including endovenous thermal ablation (using heat to close off the vein) and foam sclerotherapy (injecting a foam solution to close the vein). These modern approaches often result in shorter recovery times and less scarring.

Treatment for DVT may involve thrombolysis, where medication is used to dissolve blood clots, or thrombectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the clot. In cases of severe venous insufficiency where valves within the veins are damaged, reconstructive surgery might be considered to repair or replace these valves, although this is less common.

Before undergoing a venous operation, patients typically undergo a thorough medical evaluation, including duplex ultrasound to assess the extent of venous disease. The decision to proceed with surgery is made in consultation with a vascular surgeon, weighing the potential benefits against the risks. Post-operative care usually involves compression stockings to aid healing and reduce swelling, and patients are encouraged to maintain mobility to prevent blood clots.
