Veirusýkingum, often referred to as viral infections, are illnesses caused by viruses. Viruses are microscopic infectious agents that can only replicate inside the living cells of other organisms. They can infect all types of life forms, from animals and plants to microorganisms like bacteria and archaea.

The process of a viral infection begins when a virus attaches to a host cell and injects its genetic material into it. This genetic material then hijacks the cell's machinery, forcing it to produce more virus particles. Eventually, these new viruses are released, often destroying the host cell in the process, and can then go on to infect other cells.

Symptoms of viral infections vary widely depending on the specific virus and the part of the body it affects. Common symptoms can include fever, fatigue, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and rashes. Some viral infections are mild and resolve on their own, while others can be severe or even life-threatening. Examples of common viral infections include the common cold, influenza (flu), chickenpox, measles, and COVID-19.

Transmission of viruses can occur through various routes, including direct contact with an infected person, inhalation of respiratory droplets, contact with contaminated surfaces, or through vectors like insects. Prevention strategies, such as vaccination, good hygiene practices (like handwashing), and avoiding close contact with sick individuals, are crucial in controlling the spread of viral infections. Treatment often focuses on managing symptoms, as many viral infections do not have specific cures; however, antiviral medications are available for certain viruses.
