Vauvapeitot

Vauvapeitot, a Finnish term, translates to "baby carriers" or "baby slings." It refers to various types of fabric devices designed to comfortably and securely hold an infant or toddler against a caregiver's body. These carriers allow for hands-free mobility for the wearer while keeping the child close and supported.

There are several common types of vauvapeitot. Ring slings are single pieces of fabric with two rings, allowing for quick adjustments. Stretchy wraps are long pieces of fabric that can be tied in multiple ways to create a snug, customized fit. Woven wraps offer even more versatility in tying methods, providing excellent support for both newborns and older babies. Structured carriers, often referred to as soft structured carriers (SSCs) or buckle carriers, have padded straps and buckles for ease of use and adjustable support. Mei tais, a hybrid of wraps and structured carriers, have a panel of fabric with straps tied around the body.

The use of vauvapeitot is rooted in a long history of babywearing across many cultures. Modern proponents emphasize the benefits for both parent and child, including promoting bonding, aiding infant development through closeness and stimulation, and providing ergonomic support for the wearer, reducing strain on the back and shoulders.
