Vaurioitumiskestävyys, known in English as damage tolerance, is a concept used in engineering and materials science to describe the ability of a structure or material to resist the propagation of cracks or defects. It focuses on the behavior of a component under load when flaws are already present, rather than solely on preventing the initiation of cracks. A damage-tolerant material or structure can continue to function safely for a period even with existing damage, providing a warning before catastrophic failure occurs.

The assessment of damage tolerance typically involves analyzing the fracture mechanics of the material. This includes understanding parameters such as fracture toughness, which is the material's resistance to crack propagation, and crack growth rate under cyclic loading (fatigue). Designs that prioritize damage tolerance often incorporate safety factors and allow for regular inspection and maintenance to detect and repair incipient damage.

This principle is particularly crucial in industries where component failure can have severe consequences, such as aerospace, nuclear power, and bridges. For aircraft, for example, the fuselage and wings are designed to be damage tolerant, ensuring that small cracks from fatigue do not lead to sudden disintegration. Similarly, in nuclear reactors, the integrity of critical components is assessed not only for their initial strength but also for their ability to withstand operational stresses even with minor imperfections. The goal is to prevent brittle fracture and allow for controlled failure or repair.
