Vastupidise

Vastupidise is a fictional city-state in the northern archipelago of Valmeria, introduced into a speculative universe as a regional hub for trade, science, and culture. Located along the sheltered Strait of Konstri, it governs a core urban district and several outer towns, connected by a network of canals and rail lines. The city-state is noted for its glass-and-timber architecture, a modern port, and a governance tradition that blends older maritime customs with contemporary institutions.

History: Vastupidise was founded by seafaring communities in the 12th century and grew through maritime trade and shipbuilding. It achieved de facto autonomy after the War of the Coastal Confederations and later established a constitutional framework in the 17th century. In 1810 it joined the Valmeric Union, while preserving a high degree of self-government. The late 20th century saw administrative reforms aimed at decentralizing powers to regional councils.

Government and politics: Vastupidise operates as a constitutional republic. The unicameral Assembly has about 60 members elected by proportional representation, while an executive council led by a Prime Minister handles day-to-day government. The presidency is largely ceremonial, with limited reserve powers, and the judiciary is independent.

Economy and society: The economy combines fisheries, shipyards, logistics, and growing sectors in information technology and renewable energy. The currency is the Vast, and the population is diverse, with multiple languages spoken. Cultural life centers on the Tide Festival, maritime museums, and a tradition of craft markets. Education emphasizes STEM and maritime studies.
