Vasteherkkyys, often translated as hypersensitivity or sensory processing sensitivity, is a personality trait characterized by a deeper and more reflective processing of sensory and emotional information. Individuals with vasteherkkyys tend to notice subtle stimuli, process information more deeply, and experience emotions more intensely than the general population. This trait is not a disorder but a neutral difference in neurological functioning, affecting approximately 15-20% of the population.

Common characteristics include being easily overwhelmed by bright lights, loud noises, strong smells, or crowds. These individuals may also be more sensitive to physical discomfort, caffeine, or certain fabrics. Emotionally, they might experience empathy more acutely, be deeply affected by others' moods, and have a richer inner life. They can also be more sensitive to criticism and may take longer to adjust to change.

The concept was popularized by psychologist Elaine Aron, who uses the term "Highly Sensitive Person" (HSP). Vasteherkkyys is present in both men and women and across different cultures. While it can present challenges, such as increased susceptibility to stress and overstimulation, it also offers advantages. These can include heightened creativity, intuition, conscientiousness, and a greater appreciation for art, music, and nature.
