Elaine is a feminine given name used in English-speaking countries and beyond. The origin is uncertain; it is commonly linked to Old French forms such as Elaine or Elayne, which in turn are associated with Helena/Helene. In Arthurian legend, several figures named Elaine appear. Elaine of Astolat, often identified with the Lady of Shalott in some adaptations, is a central character whose unrequited love for Sir Lancelot features in medieval romances. Elaine of Corbenic, another figure, is the mother of Sir Galahad and wife of King Pelles.
