Historically, this has involved purchasing physical toll stickers, known as vignettes, which were then affixed to the vehicle's windshield. Possession of a valid vignette was legally required for driving on designated toll roads.

In recent years, Hungary has transitioned to a digital toll collection system. This means that instead of physical stickers, drivers now purchase electronic vignettes online or through designated service points. The registration number of the vehicle is linked to the purchased e-vignette, and enforcement is carried out electronically, often through cameras. This digital system aims to streamline the process for drivers and improve the efficiency of toll collection.

The revenue generated from vaspótlást is typically allocated towards the maintenance, development, and operation of Hungary's road network. Different types of vignettes are usually available, varying in duration of validity, such as weekly, monthly, or annual passes.
