Varzaqan

Varzaqan is a city in East Azerbaijan Province, Iran, and the capital of Varzaqan County. It is located in the northwestern part of the country, in a mountainous area of eastern Azerbaijan Province, serving as the administrative center for surrounding rural districts.

Geography and climate: The city sits at a relatively high elevation in a valley framed by mountains. The region experiences a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, and precipitation that is higher in spring.

Economy: The local economy is based on agriculture and livestock, with orchards producing grapes, apples, and other fruit. Mining is also significant in the wider county, notably the Sungun Copper Mine, one of Iran's major copper deposits.

History: Varzaqan gained international attention after the 2012 East Azerbaijan earthquakes, a strong seismic event centered near the city that caused extensive damage and loss of life. Since then, reconstruction and humanitarian relief have shaped its recent development.

Demographics and culture: The population is predominantly Azerbaijani-speaking and Shia Muslim. Local culture reflects Azerbaijani traditions, with hospitality and crafts forming part of daily life. The city is connected by road to Tabriz, the provincial capital, and to other towns in the county.
