Varoitusväritys is a Finnish term that translates to "warning coloration" or "aposematism" in English. It refers to a biological trait where a species evolves conspicuous coloration or patterns to signal its unprofitability or danger to potential predators. This coloration typically serves as a warning that the organism is toxic, venomous, or otherwise harmful, such as being distasteful or possessing sharp spines.

The underlying principle of warning coloration is that predators learn to associate the specific visual signal with a negative experience, such as illness or pain, after encountering an individual of the aposematic species. This learning process benefits both the predator, by preventing them from wasting energy and resources on inedible prey, and the prey, by reducing predation rates on the species as a whole.

Common examples of warning coloration include the bright red and black patterns of ladybugs, the yellow and black stripes of wasps and bees, and the vivid colors of poisonous frogs. These colors are often contrasting and easily noticeable in the organism's natural environment, making them memorable for predators. The effectiveness of warning coloration depends on the predator's ability to learn and remember the association between the coloration and the unpleasant consequence. Additionally, the coloration must be reliably linked to the defended state of the prey for the signal to be credible.
