Varenfell

Varenfell is a region in the northern highlands characterized by rugged mountains, dense forests, and a long coastline along the Narrow Sea. It has an estimated area of 8,200 square kilometers and a population around 320,000. The regional capital is Valcrest, a trade hub at the mouth of the Varen River. The territory is administered as a duchy within the Kingdom of Eldmere.

Geography and climate: The central chain of the Iron Spine forms much of the eastern boundary, creating a rain-saturated highland climate. Winters are cold and snowy, while summers are short and cool. The interior includes glacially carved valleys and highland moors; coastal areas feature fjord-like inlets.

History and governance: Varenfell has medieval origins and towns that grew around river crossings and coastal trade. It was consolidated into a duchy in the 13th century under Duke Harrin. The present government is a constitutional duchy with a council representing towns, agriculture, and trade. The duke acts as head of state, while an elected provincial assembly handles day-to-day governance.

Economy and demographics: The economy relies on forestry, mining (iron and tin), fishing, and tourism. Small- to mid-sized farms produce dairy, barley, and root crops. The population is predominantly Varic-speaking, with a minority Common Tongue; religious life centers on a regional church and local shrines.

Culture and notable features: Varenfell preserves folk music and craft traditions, particularly wood carving and weavings. Notable sites include Mount Garen, the Crystal Caves near Northford, and the Old Port of Harthaven. Transportation relies on a network of roads, coastal ferries, and a rural rail line connecting Valcrest to northern towns.
