Valószínűségsz is a Hungarian term that translates to "probability" in English. It is a fundamental concept in mathematics and statistics that quantifies the likelihood of an event occurring. Probability is expressed as a number between 0 and 1, where 0 indicates impossibility and 1 indicates certainty.

The study of probability emerged from the analysis of games of chance in the 17th century, with mathematicians like Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat making significant early contributions. Over time, probability theory has expanded to become a crucial tool in numerous fields, including physics, finance, engineering, and social sciences.

There are several ways to interpret probability. The frequentist interpretation defines probability as the long-run relative frequency of an event in a series of repeated trials. For example, the probability of a fair coin landing heads is 0.5 because, over many flips, heads will occur approximately half the time. The Bayesian interpretation, on the other hand, views probability as a degree of belief or confidence in an event, which can be updated as new evidence becomes available.

Key concepts within probability include random variables, which are variables whose values are determined by chance, and probability distributions, which describe the likelihood of different outcomes. Events can be independent, meaning the occurrence of one does not affect the probability of another, or dependent. Conditional probability deals with the likelihood of an event occurring given that another event has already happened. The law of large numbers states that as the number of trials increases, the observed frequency of an event will converge to its theoretical probability.
