Valuuttajäsenyydessä, often translated as "currency membership" or "currency union," refers to a situation where a group of countries or regions adopts a single currency for all their transactions. This common currency replaces their individual national currencies. The most prominent example of such an arrangement is the Eurozone, where member states of the European Union use the Euro as their official currency.

The primary motivations behind establishing a currency union often include the desire to reduce transaction costs associated with exchanging currencies, eliminate exchange rate volatility between member states, and foster greater economic integration. Proponents argue that a single currency can stimulate trade and investment by creating a more stable and predictable economic environment. It can also enhance the economic bloc's influence on the global financial stage.

However, currency unions also present significant challenges. Member states relinquish their ability to independently set monetary policy, such as adjusting interest rates, to address their specific economic conditions. This can be problematic if one member experiences an economic downturn while others are booming, as a single monetary policy may not be suitable for all. Furthermore, fiscal policies, such as taxation and government spending, generally remain under national control, leading to potential imbalances and the need for coordination mechanisms to ensure the stability of the union. The absence of independent exchange rates means that adjustments to economic shocks must occur through other channels, such as wage or price flexibility, or fiscal transfers between member states.
