Valuutavahetuskursi, also known as the exchange rate, is the rate at which one currency will be exchanged for another. It is a crucial factor in international trade, investment, and finance, as it determines the value of a country's currency relative to others. Exchange rates can be influenced by a variety of factors, including interest rates, inflation, economic performance, and geopolitical events.

There are two main types of exchange rates: fixed and floating. A fixed exchange rate is pegged to another currency or a basket of currencies, and is maintained by the central bank through intervention in the foreign exchange market. A floating exchange rate, on the other hand, is determined by the forces of supply and demand in the foreign exchange market.

Exchange rates can be quoted in two ways: direct and indirect. A direct quote shows the amount of the foreign currency that can be bought with one unit of the domestic currency, while an indirect quote shows the amount of the domestic currency needed to buy one unit of the foreign currency.

Exchange rates can also be categorized as nominal or real. A nominal exchange rate is the rate at which currencies are exchanged without adjusting for differences in price levels between countries. A real exchange rate, on the other hand, is the nominal exchange rate adjusted for differences in price levels, providing a more accurate measure of the relative value of currencies.

Changes in exchange rates can have significant impacts on a country's economy, including affecting the competitiveness of its exports and imports, influencing investment decisions, and impacting inflation. Central banks play a key role in managing exchange rates, using tools such as open market operations, foreign exchange intervention, and changes in interest rates to achieve their economic objectives.
