Valutaförfallanden, or currency collapse, refers to a rapid and significant loss of value in a nation's currency. This can happen when a currency's exchange rate against other major currencies plummets dramatically over a short period. Such a collapse can be triggered by a variety of factors, including severe economic mismanagement, high inflation, excessive government debt, political instability, or a loss of confidence in the country's economic policies.

When a currency devalues sharply, imported goods become prohibitively expensive, leading to shortages and widespread inflation. This can cripple businesses that rely on imported raw materials or components. Citizens' savings are also severely eroded, impacting their purchasing power and standard of living. Capital flight, where investors move their money out of the country to safer assets, often exacerbates the problem, further weakening the currency.

Governments may attempt to stem a valutaförfallande through various measures, such as raising interest rates to attract foreign investment, implementing capital controls to limit money outflow, or seeking international financial assistance. However, these measures can have their own negative consequences. In extreme cases, a country might resort to currency reforms, such as redenominating the currency or adopting a foreign currency, to restore stability.
