Valoyliherkkyyttä, known in English as photophobia, is a condition characterized by an abnormal intolerance to light. It is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom of an underlying medical issue. Individuals experiencing photophobia may feel discomfort or pain when exposed to ordinary levels of light, often leading them to squint or close their eyes. This sensitivity can range from mild annoyance to severe pain, affecting daily activities.

The causes of photophobia are varied and can include eye conditions such as migraines, eye infections, inflammation (like uveitis or keratitis), dry eye syndrome, and corneal abrasions. Neurological conditions, including meningitis and brain tumors, can also manifest with photophobia as a symptom. Certain medications and even some types of mental health conditions like anxiety can contribute to light sensitivity.

Diagnosing the cause of photophobia typically involves a thorough medical history and a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Depending on the suspected underlying cause, further investigations such as neurological assessments or blood tests may be recommended.

Treatment for photophobia focuses on addressing the root cause. If caused by an eye infection, antibiotics or antiviral medications may be prescribed. For dry eye, artificial tears or other lubricating agents can provide relief. Managing migraines or neurological conditions often involves specific medications and therapies. In the absence of a treatable underlying cause, strategies to manage symptoms include wearing sunglasses, using wide-brimmed hats, and minimizing exposure to bright lights or computer screens.
