Valmistusmenetelminä, often translated as manufacturing methods or production techniques, refers to the diverse range of processes and procedures used to create goods. These methods are fundamental to industry and vary significantly depending on the product, materials, scale of production, and desired quality. Broadly, they can be categorized into subtractive, additive, and formative processes.

Subtractive methods involve removing material from a larger piece to achieve the desired shape. Examples include machining operations like milling, turning, and drilling, as well as processes like grinding and laser cutting. These techniques are precise but can lead to material waste.

Additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, builds objects layer by layer from a digital model. Materials like plastics, metals, and ceramics can be used. This method allows for complex geometries and customization but can be slower and more expensive for mass production compared to other techniques.

Formative processes, on the other hand, shape materials without significant material removal. This category includes casting, where molten material is poured into a mold, and molding, where material is forced into a mold under pressure. Forming techniques like forging, stamping, and extrusion also fall under this umbrella, utilizing mechanical forces to deform the material into the desired shape. The choice of manufacturing method significantly impacts production cost, efficiency, product quality, and environmental footprint.
