Vallamkali

Vallamkali is a traditional boat race from the Indian state of Kerala. It centers on the chundan vallam, a long, snake-shaped wooden boat propelled by a large team of rowers. The crew typically comprises about 100 to 130 oarsmen, along with a helmsman who steers and a drummer who provides the rhythmic tempo. The boats are carved from jackwood and can reach lengths of 100 to 140 feet, with a distinctive elevated prow.

The race is closely associated with Kerala’s harvest festival, Onam, and takes place on rivers and backwaters across the state. The best-known Vallamkali event is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held annually on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha since 1952 and named in honor of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister.

Race format and atmosphere emphasize teamwork and synchronized paddling, guided by the drumbeat that sets the pace. Spectators line the banks to witness the procession of often colorful longboats and to enjoy the rhythmic percussion that accompanies the oarsmen.

Beyond competition, Vallamkali reflects Kerala’s boat-building heritage and maritime culture, drawing participants from various communities and contributing to regional pride and tourism. The tradition remains a symbol of communal effort, craftsmanship, and the cultural identity of Kerala’s backwater regions.
