Valencianspeaking refers to the use of Valencian, the variety of the Catalan language spoken in the Valencian Community, an autonomous region on Spain’s eastern coast. Valencian is part of the Catalan language group and is generally regarded by linguists as a recognized variety of Catalan, with its own standard norms and vocabulary. It remains largely mutually intelligible with other Catalan varieties.

The Valencian Community grants Valencian co-official status with Spanish. Public administration, education, media, and many cultural activities incorporate Valencian, and many residents are bilingual in Valencian and Spanish. Language policy supports promoting Valencian in schools and official communications, while Spanish remains widespread in daily life.

Geographically, Valencian is strongest in the provinces of Valencia, Alicante, and Castellón, with smaller numbers in neighboring regions and among Valencian-speaking communities abroad. In practice, language use varies by locality, urbanization, and age cohort; younger speakers may be more proficient in Valencian through schooling and media.

Standardization and institutions: Valencian uses the Catalan orthographic system, with Valencian-specific terminology. Normative guidance is provided by the Valencian Academy of Language, and broader Catalan linguistic institutions contribute to its rules and vocabulary. Education and media often present Valencian through dedicated programs, publishing, and broadcasts, alongside Spanish.
