Alicante

Alicante, or Alacant in Valencian, is a city and port located on the southeastern coast of Spain. It is the capital of the province of Alicante and a municipality in the Valencian Community. Situated on the Costa Blanca along the Mediterranean, it is a major tourist and maritime hub with a mild year‑round climate.

Historically, the area has been inhabited since ancient times by Iberians and later colonized by Romans and Muslims. The name Alicante is derived from Arabic, and the city was reconquered in 1248 by James I of Aragon, becoming part of the Kingdom of Valencia. The Santa Bárbara Castle, perched on the Benacantil hill, remains a prominent landmark and provides views over the city and harbor.

Key sights include the Explanada de España, a palm‑tree lined promenade with a tiled mosaic, the historic Santa Cruz district, and the Postiguet Beach. The MARQ Archaeological Museum offers regional and prehistoric collections. The Hogueras de San Juan, or Bonfires of Saint John, is the principal annual festival in June, featuring elaborate monuments and fireworks.

Economically, Alicante relies on services and tourism, supported by its commercial port and marina. The city is served by Alicante–Elche International Airport and by the Alicante Tram, a light rail network linking the city with nearby coastal towns toward Benidorm and Denia. The University of Alicante is located in nearby San Vicente del Raspeig. The city has a population of about 330,000.
