Denia

Denia is a city and port in the province of Alicante, within the Valencian Community of Spain. It serves as the capital of the Marina Alta comarca and is situated on the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, along the Costa Blanca, facing the Mediterranean. The town lies at the foot of the Montgó massif, whose limestone hills shape the landscape and shelter the area from the inland.

Denia has a long history with artifacts from Iberian and Roman periods. It was later controlled by Moorish rulers before being incorporated into the Crown of Aragon in the 13th century under James I. The fortress and castle that crown the old town are major landmarks and reflect the medieval character of the historic center.

The economy blends fishing, tourism, and agriculture. The harbor maintains a working fish market alongside a growing leisure marina, and Denia acts as a gateway to the Balearic Islands with ferry links to Palma and other destinations. The surrounding Marina Alta region is known for citrus, vegetables, and vineyards, and the town functions as a commercial and service hub for the area. Denia’s beaches include the long Las Marinas and the rocky Les Rotes, while inland the Montgó Natural Park offers hiking and nature activities.

Cultural life centers on the historic core around the castle, a weekly market, and several annual events. Notable places of interest include Denia Castle and Archaeological Museum, the church of Santa Maria, and the scenic seafront promenade. Denia is connected by road to the Costa Blanca corridor, with access via the AP-7 and N-332, and is linked by rail and tram services to Alicante and Valencia.
