Valdigne

Valdigne is a valley located in the French Alps within the department of Savoie. It forms part of the larger Tarentaise valley and is bounded by the main peaks of the Belleville and Arête ridges. The valley is intersected by the Isère river, which carves a 25‑kilometre-long course through forested slopes and alpine meadows before meeting the Rhône at Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

The region is best known for its association with the world‑renowned ski area of the Three Valleys. Its most famous resorts, Val d'Isère and Les Arcs, lie within Valdigne and together form a network of connected slopes that attract winter sports enthusiasts from around the globe. In addition, the valley hosts primary villages such as Bourg-Saint‑Maurice, Saint‑Paul‑en‑Bresse, and La Croixons, which provide historical insight into the medieval pastoral life that once dominated the high alpine terraces.

Valdigne’s landscape offers a blend of glacier‑carved peaks, ancient pine forests, and cultivated pasturelands. The valley’s elevation ranges from about 1,200 meters to more than 3,300 meters, creating micro‑climates that support diverse flora and fauna. Beyond skiing, the area supports hiking, mountain biking, and paragliding in the warmer months, while the winter sports infrastructure includes ski lifts, ice rinks, and summer educational programs on alpine ecology. The valley’s economy remains strongly tied to tourism, yet there is a growing emphasis on sustainable practices to preserve the rugged alpine environment for future generations.
