Vakuumstøping

Vakuumstøping is a manufacturing process used to create plastic parts. It involves heating a sheet of plastic until it is pliable and then stretching it over a mold. A vacuum is then applied to pull the plastic tightly against the mold, forcing it to take the shape of the mold. Once the plastic cools and solidifies, the part is removed from the mold. This technique is suitable for producing prototypes, low-volume production runs, and complex shapes.

The process begins with selecting a suitable plastic sheet, which can vary in thickness, color, and material properties depending on the desired end product. The sheet is placed in a heating element, typically a radiant heater, until it reaches a uniform temperature. Simultaneously, the mold, which can be made from various materials like wood, metal, or epoxy, is prepared. Once the plastic is heated, it is carefully positioned over the mold.

The crucial step is the application of vacuum. A vacuum pump creates a low-pressure environment between the plastic sheet and the mold surface. This pressure difference forces the softened plastic to conform precisely to the mold's contours, including intricate details and undercuts. After a sufficient cooling period, the vacuum is released, and the solidified part is demolded. Vakuumstøping is known for its relatively low tooling costs compared to injection molding, making it an economical choice for certain applications. It is often used for producing components for industries such as automotive, aerospace, medical devices, and consumer electronics.
