Vaahtosilppurit

Vaahtosilppurit, commonly known as whipped cream chargers or whipped cream dispensers, are small, cylindrical metal cartridges filled with nitrous oxide (N₂O), a colorless gas with anesthetic properties. They are primarily used in conjunction with whipped cream dispensers to create whipped cream by releasing the gas into a mixture of heavy cream and stabilizers. The gas expands the cream, creating a light, airy texture.

The chargers were originally developed in the late 19th century for medical and dental purposes, but their use in culinary applications became widespread in the 20th century. They are widely available in grocery stores, bakeries, and online retailers, often sold in packs of five or more. Each charger contains approximately 8 grams of nitrous oxide, enough to dispense about 400–500 milliliters of whipped cream.

While whipped cream chargers are safe when used as intended, improper handling—such as inhaling the gas or using them in non-food applications—can pose health risks. Nitrous oxide is a depressant and can cause dizziness, nausea, or, in high doses, unconsciousness. It is classified as a controlled substance in many countries due to its potential for misuse, particularly in recreational settings.

In addition to whipped cream, the gas can be used in other culinary applications, such as infusing beverages or creating foam for desserts. However, its primary and most common use remains in the preparation of whipped cream. Proper storage in a cool, dry place and careful handling are essential to maintain their effectiveness and safety.
