VMOFCs

VMOFCs, or Ventromedial Orbitofrontal Cortices, are a distinct region within the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) located in the front part of the brain. This area is situated at the base of the frontal lobe, above the orbits of the eyes, and the ventromedial portion specifically refers to its position on the underside and towards the middle of the OFC. The OFC itself is known to play a crucial role in a variety of complex cognitive functions.

Research has implicated the VMOFCs in critical aspects of decision-making, particularly those involving value-based choices and the integration of emotional information into these decisions. They are thought to be involved in assigning subjective value to different options, assessing potential rewards and punishments, and guiding behavior based on these evaluations. Damage or dysfunction in the VMOFCs has been linked to impairments in social cognition, emotional regulation, and the ability to make rational choices, often resulting in impulsive behavior or an inability to learn from past mistakes. Functional neuroimaging studies have consistently shown VMOFC activity during tasks requiring the assessment of reward, preference, and the anticipation of outcomes. This region works in concert with other brain areas, such as the amygdala and striatum, to process and respond to emotionally salient stimuli and to inform adaptive behavior.
