VIIIdeficiëntie refers to a deficiency in coagulation factor VIII, a crucial protein responsible for blood clotting. This deficiency is the underlying cause of hemophilia A, the most common type of hemophilia. Hemophilia A is an inherited bleeding disorder, meaning it is passed down through families, typically on the X chromosome, making it much more prevalent in males.

The severity of VIIIdeficiëntie can vary greatly among individuals. In severe cases, factor VIII levels are very low, leading to spontaneous bleeding into joints and muscles, as well as prolonged bleeding after injuries or surgery. Mild to moderate cases may only result in excessive bleeding after significant trauma or surgical procedures. Symptoms can include easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, and heavy menstrual periods in women.

Diagnosis of VIIIdeficiëntie is made through blood tests that measure the activity of factor VIII. Genetic testing can also be used to identify carriers and confirm the diagnosis. Treatment primarily involves replacing the deficient factor VIII through infusions of clotting factor concentrates. In some cases, medications that help activate factor VIII can be used. Ongoing management and prophylactic treatment (regular infusions) are often necessary for individuals with severe hemophilia A to prevent bleeding episodes.
