VFRIFR

VFRIFR is a term used to describe operating an aircraft under both Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) within the same flight, depending on weather conditions, airspace, or operational needs. It is not a separate regulatory category, but a way to express the ability to switch between flight-rule sets as conditions change. Pilots who operate under VFRIFR must be proficient in both VFR and IFR procedures and carry the equipment and filings required for each regime.

Regulatory framework and equipment: VFR operations require adherence to prevailing VFR weather minimums, visibility, and cloud clearance rules, which vary by airspace. IFR operations require an IFR flight plan, ATC clearance, and instrumentation suitable for instrument flight, along with navigation, communication, and autopilot capabilities. When weather deteriorates or IMC is encountered, a flight may transition to IFR by obtaining clearance and continuing under IFR, or, where permitted, use a special VFR clearance in suitable conditions.

Operational procedures: Preflight planning for VFRIFR involves selecting routes and altitudes compatible with both rule sets, and identifying alternate airports. During flight, pilots monitor weather closely, communicate with ATC, and manage transitions between VFR and IFR as needed—such as switching to IFR in low visibility or reverting to VFR when conditions improve and cloud clearance is regained.
