VEGFinhibiittoreita, or VEGF inhibitors, are a class of drugs that target vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF is a protein that plays a crucial role in angiogenesis, the process of forming new blood vessels. In many diseases, particularly cancer, tumor cells produce excessive amounts of VEGF to stimulate the growth of blood vessels that supply them with oxygen and nutrients, enabling their expansion and spread.

By inhibiting VEGF or its receptors, these drugs aim to block this process, thereby starving tumors of their blood supply and slowing their growth. VEGF inhibitors can be broadly categorized into two main types: monoclonal antibodies that bind directly to VEGF, and small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors that block the signaling pathways of VEGF receptors.

These medications have found application in the treatment of various cancers, including colorectal cancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer, and certain types of brain tumors. They are often used in combination with other cancer therapies like chemotherapy. Beyond oncology, VEGF inhibitors are also utilized in ophthalmology to treat conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy, where abnormal blood vessel growth in the eye can lead to vision loss.

While effective, VEGF inhibitors can have side effects. Common adverse effects include high blood pressure, fatigue, diarrhea, and impaired wound healing. More serious but less common side effects can include bleeding, heart problems, and blood clots. Their use requires careful monitoring by healthcare professionals.
